Durbin....Dick!
.
Senator Dick Durbin (D) Illinois
Yes, Dick Durbin finally caved and offered his Mea Culpa this evening, to the simultaneous delight and dismay of his spineless cohorts up in D.C. (during the dinner hour, so as to minimize the live facetime during the news cycle.)
Mr. Durbin, as you may know, compared the treatment of terrorist detainees in Guantanamo Bay with the treatment meted out by the Nazis in WWII, Soviets in their Gulags, & Pol Pot's buddies in the Killing Fields during Vietnam.....hoping, obviously, to re-ignite the imaginary righteous indignation of his more widely recognized colleagues on Capitol Hill..and to move the peanut forward in the never ending Bush Bashing carnival that has become the Democratic Party of the 21st Century.
Illinois Senator Durbin, the opposition party's Number Two,(draw your own conclusions), recoginized after a week of his half-hearted explanations of what he meant by his comments....(and it's possible that he thought he might get to occupy the rare air of those higher on the socio-political foodchain, like KKK Kleagle Bob Byrd or even Ted "Gin Blossoms" Kennedy) caved like a house of cards, as he should have, when held to account for his reckless, and borderline treasonous indictments of our military personnel a week ago.
Even Chicago Mayor Dick Dailey (again, draw your own conclusions) joined the chorus of those admonishing Durbin for his loose lipped cacophony of hatred of anything regarding forward motion, decision making, balls, or just plain common sense regarding our side's (Read: AMERICA) actions in the war on Terrorism.
How about doing the right thing Dick?
Did your father, uncle, or brother serve in a foreign conflict? They'd be happy to remind you that any time, any place, war is an extremely dirty business....and not subject to the parameters of parliamentary procedure, or some vague interpretation of what you & your colleagues loosely refer to as "international law".
OK, did anyone you know serve in a war overseas where the greater good took precedent of over the obvious desire to keep things together without having to launch an RPG or a 40mm Howitzer?
Do you feel the same way about our courageous grandfathers, uncles and nameless heroes that stormed the beach at Normandy, or continue to stand on the wall in Seoul, Heidelberg, or Croatia in the name of decency and security for all races, colors, creeds, and religions?
How about this, Dick....have you ever considered that you are blessed...(yes blessed...by God...GOD....our Creator...or is that another alien mindset for you) to live in a country that enjoys the freedoms you & Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden and Presidential wannabe John Kerry take for granted, to understand that it took better men than you to make these hard decisions? Or that it may require intestinal fortitude that you'll never understand to take the longview and risk pissing off the our supposed socialist "allies" (ne: French, Canadian, & even German), in order to end the oppression...to end the murdering....and to contain the insanity of the terrorist threat in a place where your children may not have to witness the systematic dismemberment of common decency..let alone the bodies of those courageous people who dare to call a spade a spade.
Maybe you're banking that this will just be an unpleasant memory when the time comes to fly around on the taxpayer nickel come campaign season, collecting accolades for your imaginary service and your half baked idealistic bent.
I'll go ahead and lay odds that you & your cronies will be swilling your Bollinger and Lagavulin when Schroeder, Chirac..and old What's His Name in Ottawa get their walking papers as their adoring electorates send them packing on election day. By the way...maybe you can use that experience to tighten up on your verbage for your own concession speech when your number comes up in the next election cycle.
And while you & your friends will likely hope that your metaphoric trip to the media woodshed will be forgotten by the mid-terms of 2006....I can assure you Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois....
It will not.
For Shame, Senator Durbin....For Shame.

Wow, Radiate.....that was quite a mouthful...er...three mouthfuls of attempting to explain away Mr. Durbin's self righteous claptrap in the name of "We Deserved 9/11, and shame on us for detaining these gentle souls who are only expressing their frustration at our nation through the only means they know how"...
Or in your own words, "The idea that we STILL have to hold ourselves to a different standard. Even though we were attacked - maybe BECAUSE we were attacked."
.... how sad that we can't offer them DIGITAL TELEVSION IN THEIR CELLS at GITMO!!
Get off your mealy mouthed armchair quarterback soapbox and WAKE UP!! More people are injured in Cook County Jail by guards in a year than we are holding at Guantanamo Bay....so snap out of your fog! Or maybe you should spend your vacation heading down to Cuba to see just how great these losers have it with their three squares a day and their government sanctioned prayer areas...
If it was your brother, mother, sister, or father who perished on 9/11, I have to believe that your worries about any "Global Perception" would take a backseat to your outrage..and the outrage that I and millions of Americans feel whenever we read self serviing tripe and excuses from the Dick Durbins of the world.
Hi John Paul...thanks for your post...although you misread my anger and annoyance at those who seek to divide and conquer with anger and hate toward those who, like yourself, aren't framing our current situation in its proper historical perspective.
John Paul..think carefully before you answer...did you consider the gents at Utah Beach to be murdering innocent soldiers when we liberated France in 1944...we certainly didn't do it for cheese..er..oil...we did it because then, as now..there was no one else with the courage or means to do it to preserve a world order where peace can and should prevail.
By the way, we lost almost 5 times the casualties in the Training Exercise for D-Day than we have the entire Iraqi conflict...only TV, the Web and ubiquitous news choices we have seem to illuminate and enlarge our experience because we actually get to find out about it as it happens.
You may or may not be old enough to remember what happened in '36-'38 when everyone was looking the other way in Europe as Poland was being invaded...in the name of "it's not our conflict". Many, including Joseph Kennedy...(talk about generational appeasement) then the U.S. Ambassador to the UK, simply urged FDR to ignore the stormclouds because it wasn't our affair. This, of course ended his own presidential political aspirations as he was lumped in with the rest of the Neville Chamberlain types who thought that these types of problems, like a dog putting his head under the couch, would simply go away. They were wrong then...and they are wrong today.
You probably do remember hearing about Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 where one of my favorite Presidents, a Democrat, Harry Truman, made the carefully calculated decision to drop not one, but two nukes, resulting in the deaths of over 150K men, women and children in Japan to end the bloodletting and prevent the deaths of potentially millions of Americans, Japanese & Chinese, if we had gone forward with our planned invasion of the Japanese mainland. In the immmortal words of Winston Churchill (With apologies to my colleague Paul Harvey) "We didn't make it this far being sugar candy."
So I guess the question is, where is all of this moral outrage among the left when bombs are dropped resulting in the deaths of thousands (Like the Bosnian situation 10 years ago when Clinton sent the airstrikes in and deployed troops that are stil there, for example) for the greater good, when history has shown over again and again that those who allow the cancer of facism, communism and other "lite" or "hybrid" brands of these horrible states permeate our societies are eventually relegated to the asheap of history, where they belong. Moreover, they often camoflouge themselves in the name of the social well being, socialism and several of the other points you made in your post.
As far as promoting peace, if you know me, then you know that I am nothing if not a peaceful and benevolent soul, not to mention one who does provide for many, not for publicity, but because it's right, healthcare, comfort, and aid to the poor.. You are correct that these are values that Jesus would have us all embrace...
But what about the willingness to make the tough decitions so that you can live in a country where you are allowed to provide your family with these blessings.
How about the opportunity to make sure that your children aren't blown up outside of the mall this Saturday because your home is too pretty...your car is too new, and your bank account is too large. After all, our brethren in NYC, Washington DC and Pennsylvania didn't get the opportunity to debate what should be done when a wide scale assault by global terror factions was made on our soil.
That being said, anyone who reads between the lines can see that my column is designed to make people think, hopefully with good humor, by skewering public figures who go out of their way to divide by using their positions and media connections as a venue when the rest of we..the "Great Unwashed", in their opinion, cannot.
So let's put all of our cards on the table...
Will I promote the propositon of peace & love as Christ my saviour did 2000 years ago?...absolutely.
Will I stand by and watch you & your family and friends be murdered by cowardly scumbags hiding under the cloak of anonymity and brandishing a twisted hellish religious bent that says you haven't got the right to live in peace and freedom in your home?
Not by a longshot, John Paul..
You can count on me...and our brave men & women in Uniform and their Commander when the chips are down, my friend.
